about

The first ever solo single by former Lush songwriter and guitarist Emma Anderson. It’s a short and sweet stream of consciousness with an unexpected groove and earworms aplenty.

Produced and mixed by James Chapman (Maps), it features additional guitar by Richard Oakes from Suede.

“There is, dare I say it, a kind of funky feel to this one which is probably explained by the fact I was listening to the Michael Kiwanuka album when I first came up with the tune,” explains Emma.

“Serge Gainsbourg was also on my car stereo most of the time I was driving to and from James’ studio in Northamptonshire so I think some of those late-’60s/early-’70s off-kilter funky vibes were seeping into the track when it was being recorded.

“In fact, I said to Richard Oakes when he was working on it, ‘Can you try out some Serge-type guitar flourishes?’ and he came up with what he did which was perfect.

“I probably would never have never written anything like this for Lush and I guess that is one of the benefits of going solo,” muses Emma. “You can venture into uncharted territories.”

lyrics

Children playing with fire and ice
Not aware that they’re fed with lies
Falling over when reason dies

And it’s a merry-go-round, I find
Years repeating ’til death is kind
Buried deeper in holes that bind

Down, down it goes, down to the river downstream
Stand tall in a pretty red dress
Make faces with diamonds and pearls and then
Round and round you go round the bend
Round and round you go ’til it ends

Change is never going to be easy
Voices always going unheard
Turning up too late to the party
Leaving without saying a word

The road is empty, the sky is black
Makes no sense to be turning back
Strange behaviour turns to attack
